September 2012

This month the Art Beat Bazaar is teaming up with the Mission Creek Oakland Festival to create a day of music, spoken word, art, and wine! Come out and be a part of your local artistic community!

MURALISMO http://www.markdavidashworth.com/

Over the years, singer/songwriter Mark David Ashworth has developed a highly personal musical style incorporating british folk, spanish and latin american cantautores, West-Coast psychedelia, contemporary classical music, Townes Van Zandt, and the protestant hymns and choral music of his youth. His recordings are a process of creating music out of a lifetime of influences and observations. He has traveled throughout Latin America and recorded his first album, “Viceroy” there (mostly in Mexico City). After moving to San Francisco he and bassist/arranger/composer Tristan Arnold recorded Mark David’s second album, “Bright is the Ring of Words”, which was released in 2010 on Autobus.

The past year has seen Mark and his five-piece band – Muralismo – translating these chamber-folk pieces into live, atmospheric psychedelic slow-burners.

LAUREN BECKER http://www.lauren-graysheep.blogspot.com/

Lauren Becker is editor of Corium Magazine and founder and host of the reading series East Bay on the Brain. She loves pinball, postcards, competitive cooking shows and Oakland. Chain restaurants, mushrooms and the word “literally,” not so much. She has been called a navy seal of very short fiction, which she finds pretty hilarious. Lauren has written 273 words of a novel and plans to have it finished by the time she turns 127. Her work has appeared in print and online in some very nice journals, and she is thrilled to be part of The Art Beat Bazaar.

MISS ERMA http://misserma.bandcamp.com/

The music of MISS ERMA takes you on a journey from the first note. Inspired by gypsy, folk, jazz, rock, and pop with an orchestral twinge, MISS ERMA creates a sound world that is
refreshing and enrapturing. Her melodies are bouncy and bright and she carries you right to the edge, pushes you over and then catches you again. Her voice has a playful and whimsical quality with a dash of sweetness to top it off. Some of her biggest influences include Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Fiona Apple, Bjork, Bob Marley, and Bob Dylan.
